The website, designed by Creative Edge in Truro now has a user friendly interface giving customers the ability to find Crellow suppliers using an interactive map and also keep up to date with latest news, views and events. Deborah Richards, one half of the successful duo said ‘our online engagement is going to be a key area of focus in the coming year, particularly with our social network platform of choice, Twitter. We also want to engage and collaborate in innovative new ways with the food blogging community and continue supporting local producers and businesses’.

It’s been a busy few months for Deborah and Michael, not only with the launch of the website but also their newest product, an Apple, Apricot and Cider Jam, which will be launched formally at the Cornwall Food and Drink Festival at the end of September. They created this summery offering to utilise local Cornish farmhouse cider from Duloe and it has proved a huge hit with customers. All of their hard work, both in the kitchen and beyond, has paid off though as they have recently celebrated a 4^th consecutive year of success at the Great Taste Awards.  Their Kea Plum and Catshead Apple Cheese, a traditional fruit cheese made in very small batches, received one gold star at the awards run by The Guild of Fine Food. Similarly, their Onion Relish, made from both red and white onions and uniquely flavoured with lime and mustard seeds, was also awarded a coveted gold star.

Bude Chef Dave Sargent, owner of Sargies Cornish Kitchen has just added a brand new summer product to his range – Sargies Summer Fruit Coulis

Dave launched the product at Stithians Show on the 11^th July and it proved a huge hit with customers. The coulis which is bursting with summer berries –  redcurrants, raspberries and blackberries – literally flew of the shelf, along with their famous free range meringues, lemon curd and pudding range.

‘We were a little taken aback by its popularity’ says Dave. ‘We initially envisaged the coulis as a short run limited edition product but we have now decided to retain the coulis as a permanent seasonal product in our range’. Dave is currently in talks with a Cornish fruit grower about the possibility of supplying seasonal berries in bulk to ensure the product is as sustainable and local as possible.

The new Summer Fruit Coulis is currently available in all the usual Sargie stockists in Cornwall. However, Dave is still on the lookout for new outlets and would love to hear from those wanting a sample batch to try.

Many businesses miss a trick here. Entering (and winning!) awards is a great method of boosting your press coverage and particularly beneficial for small businesses, working with small PR budgets.

Yes, entry forms can be time consuming (which is why so many small businesses are put off from entering) but once you have done one, it can often be tweaked for other awards.

Why not make entering awards part of your PR strategy?

My top five tips for entering awards:

1. Read the rules and questions carefully to make sure you are eligible to enter.

2. Pitch your answers according to the specific focus of the award.

3. Check spelling and formatting and give your entry a clear structure.

4. Go to the awards ceremony if you are shortlisted – it provides great networking potential.

5. If you win (or even if you are just shortlisted) make the most of it.

b) write a blog post
c) use social networking such as Twitter and Facebook to tell your friends, clients and potential clients about your achievements
